Reflection

well, elections are just around the corner for next years officers. I am very nervous that people will not come to elections and will not want to run. I am running for President again, and I am even more nervous that I may not get it. I really want the position again because I truly enjoy what I do for AMA. I am excited to see who will run though, and hopefully it will be a good turnout. This year has been great for AMA. Last year was a bit hard and very few programs were held (I wasnt president). This year, we have had over 3 speakers and a few events. We also now have a database of members that we can email to. We are working very hard to fix past mistakes. I am thankful for everyone who has come to the programs we have had and I only hope that you all keep coming in the future. I will let you all know how the elections go by tonight!!
oh and also, this blog will be updated and kept up after this class is over, so watch out for more AMA news!!! :)

Just a Reminder that elections will be this Wednesday, May 11th at 7:15 pm in Purnell 115.

I have also been in contact with a few organizations and speakers for next semester!
Some of the things you can look forward to are:

A possible co-sponsorship of an awesome music festival with Kappa Alpha Theta
AMA would possibly help WVUD with their marketing campaign
A speaker from Black & Decker who is a past AMA President at UD
A speaker from J&L Marketing
and TONS of other AWESOME programs!!

Bragging Rights

It's Honors Day at University of Delaware! I have a blog! What do those two things have in common? Not very much, except for the fact that my blog gives me a great outlet to BRAG about the fact that I am recieving an award from the Business School today!! Thats Right! I am being HONORED on HONORS day! I feel it is ok to brag about this, since it is allowed to be proud of oneself. So, I will be recieving an award for outstanding leadership and the pursuit of knowledge (or something silly like that). YAY!! GOOOOO ME!! :) You may congratulate me when you see me.

Ok, Im done now! Have a great weekend everyone! Happy Mothers Day to all the moms, Happy Mothers Day to the ladies who are future moms, and men, you better wish all of them a Happy Mothers Day!!!

Why Be Involved?

Fellow students, I do no intend for this to be a lecture of any sort, simply my opinion on the matter!

I belief, strongly belief, that every student needs to be involved in activities. Studying hard is excellent but in this day and age, it is simply not enough. Getting involved opens doors for a person that one would not have otherwise. What doors? They are countless, but here are some that I have found to be worthwhile to mention...

You get to know so many more people than you thought you would. You network with these people, you say hi to them in the halls of Purnell, and you feel some connection with random faces you never thought you would.
Obviously employers look upon this favorably. Being a member is one thing, but saying that you held a officer position means you are one step better than the guy/girl next to you. You possess qualities that are important in the business world today.
You end up impressing yourself and feeling better about your days spent. I feel much better when I am able to put together a beneficial program for students (be it only 3 times a semester) than watching TV at home for the evening. I know that I am doing something worthwhile and yet fun...What more could I want?
People begin to recognize your achievements and all you do. It feels amazing to have professors know what you do and congratulate you on your efforts. It feels even better to receive an award for leadership from the business school, which I am getting today!

So, after those few points, and there are many more, I urge you all to become involved and participate in college, because after all, it does end sometime.

By popular demand, I am going to try and elaborate more on certain details which pertain to AMA (and I will try to be short, since to really find out all of this information, YOU should come to the meetings):

Dues: Yes, to be a member you have to pay money. But, its cheap as hell!! It costs $5 a term/$10 a year. You pay this to the AMA treasurer.
Meetings: No, AMA does not hold regular meetings! Why? I feel that gathering a bunch of college business students into one room and have them listen to myself talk is absolutely useless. Instead, I would rather plan programs for the students to come and learn or enrich their lives in some way. Programs such as speakers, resume workshops, and panels.
PR: AMA does need to have a lot more PR done next year. Actually, a ton more! AMA was a bit in the slump when I became President. Therefore, this whole year has been about planning programs and getting our feet wet with the student body. Next year will be the year to become FAMOUS!!!
Joining: Yes, anyone can join AMA. AMA will take any major and any year student!! Just come and show some interest...it can not hurt!!

UPDATE! GOOD NEWS!
elections will be held MAY 11th at 7:15pm in Purnell 115!! I hope that everyone comes and votes for the officers that they feel will be best for AMA. The positions that will be available are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Marketing Chair, and PR Chair. If you would like to run, please bring your resume and a 3 min speech prepared to illustrate why you would be the best candidate for that position!!!

Here are a few things to note:
* Elections will be held on May 11th at 7pm. Location TBA
* To run for a position, please bring a resume with you and please prepare a 3 min blurb as to why you are right for AMA and what you will bring to AMA.
* Just to let you all know, AMA was just told we will be given $700 for next term! Which is on top of the money that we have now in our budget (trust me, that is a lot of money). This means that hopefully next term we can do some big project.

After a lot of talking with J&L Marketing, they will unfortunately not be able to make it to AMA this year. They did however promise me to come in september of the next term. So, regretfully I have to inform you all that AMA will not be hosting a speaker until the next board will be in place. This semester has been very difficult in terms of contacting people to come to AMA. I wish we had more speakers, but we tried our very best. On a brighter note, we will be hosting elections in the next 2 weeks; more on that to come soon!!!

Yes, that is right! You heard it first! AMA will be hosting elections very soon and we will be changing a few things for next year. We will still have all of the old positions available: President, VP, Secretary, and Treasurer. We will also be creating a new position, Marketing chair, which will help with all PR efforts for AMA's events. Can't wait to see all of you there!!!

I am sure that you all want to know what is going on with AMA? Well, let me put you to rest! AMA was going through a rough month. We contacted a few people to come speak at UD but they never got back to us. Plus, all of the executive board members were going through crazy times with schoolwork.
Now, we need to hold elections for next term and hopefully hold a speaker before May 18th. The speaker will most likely be from a company called J&L Marketing. J&L is a national firm that specializes in direct marketing for car dealerships. Elections will be held soon, so watch for an email AND A BLOG POST from AMA!

We have just created an email blast to go out to all of our members to inform them of the speaker. We are also creating flyers to hang up in the halls for the event. In about a week, I will email Mrs. Joyce Hart so that she can email the whole business school of the event. Otherwise, we are in touch with another speaker from an excellent advertising firm...so keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned!!!

1st Event of Spring '05

AMA is pleased to announce that Mr. Corrente and Mr. Salinski from American Express will be speaking on March 9th, 2005 at 7pm in Purnell Hall room 115.

Mr. Dustin Corrente's personal experience is in Finance & Business. He graduated from UD with a degree in Finance. Then he started with the company (AMEX) in their Wilmington office as an advisor and is now a District Manger of their Philadelphia office. He often recruits students at the UD campus!
Mr. Jason Salinski will be joining Mr. Corrente. Mr. Salinski was Mr. Corrente's mentor and is the Field Vice President of the Wilmington, DE office. He is also a UD graduate and has a lot of industry experience. They work together in their recruiting efforts at UD.

They will be speaking about what they look for when they recruit from UD, what their business experience has been like, and how marketing plays a role in what they do (even though they work within the finance field).
